1508 completes redesign of Cape Town’s famed waterfront hotel

Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, has unveiled a new design by 1508, inspired by South Africa’s heritage and culture.

1508’s Dubai studio was appointed to transform every aspect of the hotel, from a new foyer and reception, to 112 guestrooms and suites, a refreshed swimming pool and spa, signature restaurant and two bars. Through its design scheme, the firm has paid homage to Cape Town’s evolution from a bustling trade port to a cosmopolitan hub.

The focus of each transformed guestroom is the waterfront view and an abundance of natural light. The material palette reinforces the refined aesthetic of the hotel, with elegant wall panelling complemented by soft furnishings. Warm colours are influenced by the region’s heritage, with hues of deep blue, greens and maroon accompanied by bespoke rugs that showcase an interplay of colour and pattern synonymous with African design.

A new addition to the hotel, the Cape Grace Suite is an elevated space situated on the fourth floor, with a striking view of Table Mountain. The space’s design integrates a fully customised bar with an adjoining butler’s pantry, while the lounge and dining area is complete with modest, comfortable furniture, accentuated with considered lighting features and a bespoke study nook.

The Library Lounge has been imagined as a ‘traveller’s den’ packed with curiosities and unique objects. In the space resides a ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, where 1508 have curated a collection of books and items specific to the Cape region. Large windows have been strategically incorporated into the lounge’s design, amplifying the space and connecting guests to their surroundings. A central bar meanwhile serves as a focal point, providing a social hub for guests to gather.

“The Cape Grace renovation is undoubtedly an extraordinary project that brings this historical hotel into the future, keeping the spirit that made it the legend that it is, completely intact,” says Anthony Taylor, Design Principal at 1508. “When crafting the interiors for the hotel we wanted a stay at the hotel to be not only a memorable experience, but an unforgettable journey both exclusive and unique.”

The restaurant’s design concept is rooted in Cape Town’s botanical heritage, taking guests on a culinary journey through the velds of South Africa. The new hotspot houses a centralised bar with a private dining space, cosy nooks with plush seating, an open servery and large bay windows. 1508 looked to the local flora and fauna for influences, while also championing the location’s views.

The hotel’s famed Bascule Bar has been revitalised, with the new design drawing on Shebeen culture and the Prohibition era. The mysterious appeal of a speakeasy bar is enhanced by atmospheric lighting and warm-hued timber echoing that of the venue’s whiskey barrels.

Taylor explains: “In crafting The Cape Grace’s F&B spaces, we dedicated significant time and effort to curate an experience that transcends traditional dining. Our goal was to fashion a place that not only engages your senses but also guides you through an unforgettable journey focusing on a classical contemporary reimagination of spaces. The essence lies in creating a profound depth of journey, weaving through the different ground floor areas, captivating people from the very moment they step into the hotel to the moment they leave. It’s about crafting an immersive experience that lingers long after your stay is over, leaving an indelible mark on every visitor.”
