Electronic Toll Collection System to Launch at Five Vietnamese Airports

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has announced the implementation of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system at five major airports across the country, set to commence from May 5.

Initially piloted at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, the ETC system will now be extended to three additional airports, including Cat Bi in Hai Phong city, Phu Bai in Thua Thien-Hue province, and Da Nang city.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the ACV plans to install the ETC system at the T3 terminal of Tan Son Nhat Airport and the expanded T2 terminal of Noi Bai Airport, both currently under construction.

Motorists equipped with existing ETC tags for highways and expressways will be able to seamlessly navigate through the airports’ toll lanes without additional tags or procedures.

During the pilot phase from February 6 to March 19, over 203,606 vehicles utilized the ETC lane at Noi Bai, while 132,926 vehicles passed through the lane at Tan Son Nhat.

The ACV has reported stable operations of the system, ensuring smooth traffic flow even during peak travel seasons such as the Lunar New Year Festival.

Approximately 90% of vehicles successfully paid via ETC cards through the non-stop toll test lanes, resulting in a 1.8-fold increase in vehicles passing through compared to traditional toll lanes, thus significantly reducing congestion at exits.

With nearly 5 million cars in Vietnam, 96% of which are equipped with ETC tags and accounts, the nationwide implementation of the ETC system is expected to streamline toll collection processes.

Following its integration into airports, the Ministry of Transport plans to extend the ETC system to seaports, parking facilities, insurance, and vehicle technical checking services as part of broader transportation modernization efforts.
