In April 2026, the interior architecture firm Freudenberger Design Studio, led by Nina Freudenberger, will open its doors in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The house marks Freudenberger’s following design for the California-based company’s investment, which was conceived as a girl house to Sparrows Lodge and features a comparable air of inherent style, an authentic approach to hospitality, and an acute appreciation for the Carmel neighborhood. The 35-key resort may be situated in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s historic center on two floors. A key indoor/outdoor bar with local wines, craft beers, cocktails, and an artisan boutique full of customized sundries may be located within the space. It will have a loving lobby rooted in relaxed-coastal sophistication with rustic woods, sweet neutrals, and natural textures. A large outside patio will be anchored there by Terremoto LA vegetation, firepits, liquid features, and numerous lounge and seating areas. Local favorites will be served on a guest-exclusive list of smaller bites and snacks for dining in the room, in the cafe, or takeaway picnics. The furnishings, cabinetry, and joinery in the guestrooms, which range from a King Room to a One Home hotel, are all bespoke in every way. They are complemented by fabrics and textiles by Zak and Fox and Christopher Farr, Portuguese and Chinese tiles, and imported light fixtures. Many rooms also have fireplaces. A palette of warm, earthy tones and rich textures is based on the free-spirited energy of the 1970s and Carmel’s timeless beauty and is intended to inspire both old and new travelers seeking an environment with a story.
