Hotel Gotham Newcastle has appointed former Operations manager of the Apartment Group, Chris Thompson, as its new general manager ahead of its Autumn opening.
Bringing a “wealth of experience” from his tenure with other brands such as Malmaison and Hotel du Vin, the hotel said he is set to lead the team at Hotel Gotham Newcastle, promising guests a “multisensory experience with exceptional service”.
Hotel Gotham Newcastle is located on the site of the city’s former fire station and police station. Opening in late 2024, the fire station side of the building will feature 60 designed bedrooms and a restaurant and bar, complete with a DJ booth. The police station side of the hotel will open in late 2025, offering 30 bedrooms and an event space in the historic Court Rooms, accommodating gatherings of up to 120 guests.
Thompson is currently building his pre-opening team, choosing individuals with a “passion for delivering memorable guest experiences. By incorporating successful elements from Hotel Gotham Manchester and adding unique twists, the hotel said it aims to become the premium destination in Newcastle.
Thompson said: “There is already a buzz in the city regarding the opening, so I can’t wait to welcome guests to stay in the quirkiest but most luxurious surroundings in the North East. The food and beverage offering will be like no other, whether dining in our restaurant, sipping cocktails in our bar or dancing the night away to live music, Gotham will have it all and provide experiences that Newcastle hasn’t seen yet!
“I’ve watched the project for some time now with excitement and anticipation. It’s an iconic building in Newcastle in an area with so much redevelopment. Gotham is more than a hotel, it’s an experience where every detail is designed to exceed your expectations. There is nothing like it in the city. The potential is enormous, so when the opportunity arose I had to be a part of it.”
