Hotel Manager Sentenced to 10 Years for Raping Tourist in India

In a recent verdict, a court in Hisar City, India, has handed down a 10-year prison sentence to Gulshan Kumar, a hotel manager convicted of raping a female tourist three years ago.

As reported by The Times of India, the trial concluded on March 19, with Kumar also being fined Rs50,000 (approximately US$600).

According to Tribune India, the incident took place in 2020 when a 40-year-old tourist, accompanied by friends, visited the northwest city of Hisar and lodged at a prominent hotel situated in Red Square.

During her stay, the manager allegedly entered her room at night and committed the assault.

Subsequently, he locked the hotel’s main gate, confining the victim for 40 minutes before she managed to flee.

Following the ordeal, the tourist lodged a complaint with the authorities, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.

This verdict serves as a significant development in the pursuit of justice for victims of sexual assault in India.

Hisar, also known as Hissar, serves as the administrative hub of Hisar district in Haryana, northwestern India.

Positioned 164 km (102 mi) west of New Delhi, the capital of India, Hisar has been designated as a counter-magnet city for the National Capital Region, aiming to foster development as a viable alternative growth center to Delhi.
