Hotel Art Deco Montana has unveiled an array of new public spaces designed by Ina Rinderknecht.
Following the renovation of its guestrooms in 2022, the hotel entrusted Ina Rinderknecht to embark on a complete overhaul of its ground floor public spaces. The designer’s team stripped back the interiors to the original structure and crafted elegant, bespoke furniture for each room.
The renovation of the ground floor included the main Scala restaurant, Hemingway Rum Lounge, the adjoining cigar lounge and the main reception area. By refreshing the intricate woodwork and walls, the design team were able to preserve the historical integrity of the spaces whilst a strong emphasis on lighting design serves to highlight the boiserie and marble panels. To complement the original charm of the Art Deco building, Rinderknecht’s team selected soft rose and aqua greens for the restaurant, both through fabrics and the stone used on the custom-made tables.
The tone of the new furniture was inspired by the hall, with its pink-hued marble cladding, as well as the dark green of the original fireplace. The custom benches gracefully integrate into niches, connecting the front room with the main hall. The versatility of the furniture was one of the principal objectives of the project – the large centre table serves the breakfast buffet in the morning, while during the day, large groups can dine at the central communal table. The green sideboards meanwhile double as breakfast stations in the morning and elegant consoles during the day.
With its beautiful high ceilings, the terrace of the Scala restaurant is adorned with intricate timber panelling that extends to the glass door frames. The wooden floors combined with the fabric enveloping the seating is offset by lighting design by the New York Design Studio Apparatus, which is hung from the coffered ceiling. Serving as a centrepiece, the grand chandelier’s glass globes echo the delicacy of the chairs upholstered in soothing tones.
Contrastingly, the Hemingway Rum & Cigar Lounge exudes a darker, cosier ambiance, evoking a masculine touch through dark green, camel brown and bronze accents. Custom-designed leather benches, tables, and a bar contribute to its distinctive look, while Maxalto lounge chairs further enhance the space.
Jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong’s namesake, The Louis Bar has undergone a remarkable transformation, featuring a new counter, back bar and furniture. A previously dark corner of the property now radiates a light and inviting feel, creating a more vibrant and appealing setting. Jazz and blues meanwhile provide the perfect backdrop for a smooth immersion into the world of whiskey.
