Jean-Philippe Nuel designs N Le Spa for Le Negresco

Architect Jean-Philippe Nuel and international spa expert Patrick Saussay have designed the new wellness facilities for Nice’s Le Negresco.

Jean-Philippe Nuel has designed a bespoke 700m2 space spread over two levels, with the Cours Saleya’s flower market, positioned in the heart of Nice, functioning as a source of inspiration. On the first floor, a reception area reveals a dialogue between heritage and modernity, where flowing architecture works in conjunction with the building’s original structures. Traces of history, such as original cornices and moldings, can still be seen on the ceiling.

Like in the hotel’s vast art collection, eras combine in a unique alchemy. The white of the façade and the Salon Royal are punctuated by the powder pink of the cupolas, while seats, screens and carpets feature floral motifs, providing a colourful counterpoint. The blond oak parquet, meanwhile, with its Point de Hongrie pattern, harmonises with Carrara marble.

Opposite the entrance is artwork by Gerhard Marck, depicting an embracing couple and setting the tone for the subsequent spaces. Further along is a barber’s area complete with lacquered wood and deep blues. Adjacent to the barbershop, Jean-Philippe Nuel has also designed a boudoir area, decorated in light woods and soft shades that create a feminine, enveloping atmosphere.

The second floor is home to l’Écrin, a 100m2 private spa suited to duo treatments. This area features all the spa’s signature elements: floral motifs punctuated by black and white stripes, oversized pearl necklaces and ceiling decorations inspired by Greek and Roman mythology.

The spa also features a large relaxation area where warm colours reflect those of Nice’s city walls. The curvaceous architecture sets the scene for a series of lounges, where curtains also interact with works of art, including a white marble sculpture of Psyche and Love and a more modern cubist sculpture by Alexandre Archipenko. Here, seven treatment rooms are found, each with an aesthetic theme related to the city of Nice – including the ‘Promenade’ and the ‘Cours Saleya’.

The spa also comprises a sauna and hammam, as well as a jacuzzi and swimming pool, which are integrated into the architecture in a manner reminiscent of ancient baths. The pool features a stainless-steel basin that amplifies the movement of water, while rays of natural light seep in through perforations in the original building.
