KLM has announced the names of its first four A321neo aircraft. The first A321neo, named Swallowtail, is expected to arrive at the end of August. Later this year, the KLM fleet will be strengthened with the addition of Peach Blossom, Common Brimstone and Waved Carpet.
With this new series of aircraft, KLM continues its tradition of giving unique names to its planes. Over the past 104 years, various themes have been chosen, ranging from names of members of the Royal family to bridges, aviation pioneers, and national parks. The theme selected by airline employees for the new series of aircraft is butterflies.
The introduction of the A321neo marks a significant milestone in airline’s fleet renewal efforts, aligning with the sector plan of “Cleaner, Quieter, More Efficient.” These new aircraft are considerably quieter than the current generation of planes and result in a 21% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger-kilometer.
KLM operates a fleet of 208 passenger and cargo aircraft that connect people, communities, and economies around the world. Airline is constantly upgrading the inflight experience and investing in quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft. KLM has a fleet tailored to the markets and geographical areas it services. The highfrequency European network is serviced by KLM Cityhopper using Embraers and KLM using larger Boeing 737s. Both feed vital traffic to and from the Schiphol Airport hub, from which the airline offers flights to intercontinental destinations using Boeing 787s and 777s and the Airbus A330s. Transavia has a fleet of Boeing 737s and an Airbus A321neo that operates a point-to-point network aimed at leisure travellers.
