Milan Bergamo Airport celebrates record-breaking first half of 2024

Milan Bergamo Airport announce its busiest first half of the year on record, handling 8,417,014 passengers between January and June 2024. This achievement represents a significant 10% increase over the previous best result recorded during the first half of last year, with an additional 766,652 passengers welcomed.

Milan Bergamo Airport saw passenger growth in all key metrics, including a year-on-year increase of 9.9% on scheduled flights and a 29.5% rise on charter flights. Furthermore, an increasing number of travellers are utilising Bergamolynk, a dynamic service which enables passengers to plan their journey by using Milan Bergamo Airport as their connecting hub.Aircraft movements during this six-month period stood at 53,623, up 10.1% from 2023.

The busiest destinations during the first half of the year included Tirana, Bucharest, London Stansted, and Naples, while the favourite charter destinations were Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

The strong growth was aided by the airport’s activities in attracting new airlines and the launch of new services. During the first half of the year, a total of seventeen new routes were introduced by Aeroitalia, Eurowings, Neos, Norwegian, Ryanair, Dan Air, Lumiwings and Nile Air, with the latter three being new to Milan Bergamo Airport.

The diversification of the airport’s portfolio of destinations gives passengers more choices, whether they are seeking to explore new city break options, sun-filled holiday destinations, or travel for business. The lineup of new destinations includes the likes of Helsinki, Sarajevo, Hannover, and Copenhagen, ideal for city breaks and business travel, while holiday seekers can now choose from new flights to Skiathos, Boa Vista, and Dubrovnik, among others.

More new routes are to come in the second half of the year, including Aeroitalia’s service to Palermo, Neos’ Amritsar link, and Ryanair flights to Salerno.

Additionally, during the first half of the year, Milan Bergamo Airport inaugurated its expanded northern apron and a new taxiway, enhancing its capacity and operational efficiency. The expansion includes three new aircraft stands, increasing the airport’s total to 48.

To cater for the increased passenger traffic and support further growth, Milan Bergamo Airport plans to expand its passenger terminal. This includes a new check-in hall, a redesigned security area with advanced X-ray systems, and an expanded non-Schengen departures zone, set to be completed by November 2025.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO, said: “We are thrilled to report such a strong performance for the first half of 2024.
