New Airline President at WestJet Group

Diederik Pen has been named the President of WestJet Airlines, starting from April 1, 2024. Pen, who currently serves as the WestJet Group Chief Operating Officer and President of WestJet Airlines, will report directly to Alexis von Hoensbroech, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the WestJet Group. As the CEO, von Hoensbroech will retain overall responsibility for the WestJet Group’s strategic direction.

“Diederik’s experience as a respected leader, with a track record of operational success, will be critical as we continue our growth strategy, including the integration of Sunwing Airlines,” said von Hoensbroech. “With the largest narrow-body aircraft order book in Canada, it is critical we optimize safe and reliable performance for our business, as we deliver more affordable options and better connectivity to Canadians.”

Since joining the WestJet Group in October 2021, Pen, as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, has played a crucial role in improving the Group’s operational performance. In leading the recovery efforts, Pen has had a significant impact on various aspects such as airline operations, inflight services, airport operations, technical operations, labor relations, safety, crew resources, and training. As the WestJet Group Chief Operating Officer and President of WestJet Airlines, Pen will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Group, successful labor negotiations, and maintaining the overall operational reliability that WestJet guests expect. Additionally, Pen will also take on the position of the Transport Canada Accountable Executive.

Over the course of the past three years, the WestJet team has shown unwavering dedication towards meeting the travel requirements of Canadians and ensuring the success of our airline. Working with such a committed, forward-thinking, and enthusiastic group of individuals has been truly gratifying, expressed Pen. As we embrace the positive momentum of a robust financial and operational state in 2023, and place our attention on the future growth of the WestJet Group, it is paramount that we persist in collaborating to enhance our dependability and achievements.

Before joining WestJet, Pen had over 25 years of experience in the aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific and European regions. As an Executive Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer for various airlines, he successfully led expansions and managed operations for rapidly growing, ultra-low-cost enterprises.
