Cheval Collection has appointed Tom Gibson as general manager of its Edinburgh properties. Gibson, formerly the general manager of Virgin Hotels in Glasgow, brings extensive luxury sector experience, including roles at The Glasshouse and Dalmahoy, Marriott Hotel and Country Club. The appointment aligns with Cheval Collection’s global expansion, which includes a second property in Dubai and additional properties in Scotland. John Philipson, COO of Cheval Collection, emphasised the value Gibson brings to their strong Edinburgh team. Gibson expressed enthusiasm for working with Cheval Collection, highlighting Edinburgh’s growing appeal for luxury serviced apartments. Cheval Collection, a member of the Global Hotel Alliance, is pursuing growth through management agreements and plans to launch Cheval Maison West Regent in Glasgow next year. The company currently operates nine locations in London, three in Edinburgh, and one in Dubai.
Peel Waters has unveiled two development sites along Liverpool’s waterfront at Princes Dock and is seeking global hotel operators for these locations. The sites are near the city centre, the new Isle of Man Ferry terminal, and Everton Football Club’s new stadium. In May, Peel Waters and Peel Ports signed a 50-year agreement with Global Ports Holding Plc to operate services from Liverpool Cruise Port. The new developments will enhance the Princes Dock neighbourhood, which includes new homes and commercial spaces. Chris Capes, development director at Liverpool Waters, highlighted Liverpool’s international appeal and the potential for these waterfront hotels to attract more visitors. He also mentioned plans for the site of the current temporary cruise liner terminal, aiming to create a transformative project for Liverpool’s waterfront.
UKHospitality has praised the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) commitment to lowering the VAT rate for hospitality, as outlined in their manifesto. The SNP’s proposed VAT reform aims to boost growth, job creation, and lower prices in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Leon Thompson, executive director of UKHospitality Scotland, emphasised the importance of this change for economic growth and talent recruitment. He also supported a devolved migration system to address skills shortages in hospitality. Thompson called for cooperation between the Scottish and UK Governments to create a favourable regulatory and tax environment for the hospitality industry, stressing Scotland’s status as a leading destination and the sector’s significant contribution to the economy.
Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre has appointed Craig Routledge as the new general manager. Routledge joins from Eden Hotel Collection, where he held several GM roles. Kilworth House, comprising 44 bedrooms, two restaurants, and an open-air theatre, has been without a permanent GM since December 2023. Routledge expressed excitement about joining Kilworth in its 21st anniversary year, praising its unique combination of luxury hotel and acclaimed outdoor theatre. He aims to enhance the guest experience and lead the team to new heights.
