The annual Tokyo Festival takes place from 15 to 19 September 2024, and all roads lead to Ikebukuro for a showcase of the performing arts.
Performances range from one-act and multiple-act plays to dance shows featuring both traditional and contemporary moves.
The event is meant to give both tourists and locals a deeper appreciation of traditional and modern Japanese dance and theatre, thanks to some of the leading performers in the fields.

For foreign travellers coming in for the festival, Tokyo Festival organisers offer special tours for those whose native language is Chinese, English, or Korean.
One tour centres on the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s performance of the Kabuki classic Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai. This takes guests around famous sites featured in the play, giving guests a historical background to enhance their appreciation of the performance.
Another tour gives guests a closer look at the famed Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, showing off its unique design created by famed architect Yoshinobu Ashihara.
