Wizz Air celebrated the 4th anniversary of its base in Tirana International Airport

Wizz Air and Tirana International Airport celebrated the fourth anniversary of operations since the opening of Wizz Air base in Tirana.

On 1 July 2020, the airline inaugurated its base in the Albanian capital and in the last year alone provided nearly 5 million people with affordable travel opportunities from and to Tirana International Airport. This summer Wizz Air will have 13 state-of-the-art Airbus A320 family aircraft stationed in its Tirana base – one of the largest and most successful bases in its network. Overall since the start of operations, Wizz Air has served a total of over 12 million passengers to and from Albania, now operating to over 50 fantastic destinations in 16 countries.

The latest additions to the Albanian network include a unique route to Valencia in Spain, currently only served by Wizz Air from Tirana International Airport, as well as exciting connections to Leipzig and Stuttgart in Germany starting this fall.

In April Wizz Air itroduced its WIZZ MultiPass to Albania, a one-of-a-kind flight subscription in Europe that allows to get a one-way or return flight per month for a fixed fee, regardless of seasonality or proximity to the departure date.

Establishing a base in Tirana does not only significantly expand travel opportunities from Albania, but also contributes to the development of tourism, aviation industry and the country’s economy. The airline has been actively recruiting flight and cabin crew, and has so far opened over 400 direct jobs in Tirana, while providing for around 9,000 indirect employment opportunities* with its passenger traffic numbers since the start of operations. With support from Tirana International Airport and interest in tourism sector development, Wizz Air intends to continue investing in its Tirana base and contributing to the Albanian economy growth.

Diarmuid Ó Conghaile, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, said: “We are very happy to be celebrating the fourth anniversary of our base in Tirana, powered by our successful cooperation with Tirana International Airport. The airline’s growth over the past four years testifies to our commitment to the Albanian market and our intention to continue to make air travel accessible to more and more passengers. We will strive to keep on offering new and exciting destinations and affordable travel options to travelers and investing into the Albanian economy.”
