I took this image from our J-36 sailboat, Cayennita Grande, at sunset on New Year’s Day 2009, as we sailed back to Christiansted Harbor, St. Croix, USVI. We had spent the first day of 2009 enjoying the sea turtles, porpoises and other creatures in the Buck Island underwater national park.
After 14 years of cruising the Caribbean Sea on a different sailboat, we like St. Croix more than any other island because the harbor is clean and beautiful. We have seen far too many islands destroy their most important asset, the ocean, through ignorance. I hope that World Ocean Day will help inform those who don’t already know how important a balanced ocean environment can be.
